Who, Me?
When I was little and the house would get quiet, my mom would yell, “What are you up to?” I’d invariably reply, “Who, me?” even though I was the only one in the house and knew full well whom she was addressing. My kids do the same thing: ”Who, me?”
Sometimes this response is to stall in order to cover up whatever malfeasance has occurred. Sometimes it buys time to figure out an appropriate response. Usually, “Who, me?” is a mindless response because the answer isn’t within reach or is possibly silly or embarrassing. In all three scenarios, the next utterance after “Who, me?” is usually, “Nothing.”
Well, I’ve had lots of folk ask me “What are you doing?” recently and I’ve found myself slipping into the pattern above. Some of my friends do a Work In Progress Wednesday post on their blogs. I should probably do that, but I’d rather be working on the work in progress than write about working on it.
I have been busy, so the answer, “nothing,” isn’t going to fly anymore.
So, here’s the update:
Family stuff:
* School is out and the acting classes I teach are over for the summer. Free time with my 3 kids, which brings me joy.
* I’m teaching a musical theatre acting camp for two weeks, which is an all-day gig. My kids are involved, so I’m with them, which is fantastic. My oldest daughter is directing the show.
Writing news:
* As you probably know, I have a new agent who is fabulous. My YA paranormal, SOUL PURPOSE is in submission with publishers, but since it is summer, I expect it to take a loooooong time for the editors to respond. The subs were sent out last week.
* I’m half-way through a children’s non-fiction on Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches.
* I have begun two books in a paranormal romance series (adult), DEATH ANGEL and MUSIC OF THE HEART. I love writing in this genre. So fun. Using a pen name, of course.
* Polishing two children’s picture books–not thrilled with them. I’m so clueless about this genre. Guess I’ll get a professional children’s editorial opinion before I burden my agent with them.
* Working on solidifying two YA concepts. One deals with DNA experimentation begun during the cold war resulting in the creation of a super species (an unwilling one, of course, that has now reached the teen age). The other is a modernization of the original Grimms Fairy Tale of Hansel and Gretel. It sounds stupid, I know, but the original story is dark and creepy. And I’m not going to use little kids lost in the woods finding a candy house. I’m focusing on the abandonment and the lure of safety that is only an illusion.
So, that’s what I’ve been up to.
If I’m lucky, I’ll come out of the summer with 1) a completed NF 2) a completed paranormal romance 3) The outline for a new YA project 4) a book deal for SOUL PURPOSE and maybe its sequel, SOUL POSSESSION.
What are you working on? (And you can’t answer, “who, me?”) Are you bouncing around in different genres like me? Are you writing while your kids are at home, and if so, how’s that going?
Have a killer weekend!

Wow, busy, busy. I’m most intrigued about your Hansel and Gretel YA. Someday when it’s written, may I be a beta reader?

I’d love that, Annie. It is only messy jots in my notebook right now, but as soon as I “get” it and start writing, I’ll let you know. Thanks.

I am getting fully into the writing spirit this summer. I waited too long already to wait any longer. Kids are home and I still have to work full time bringing in a pay check for now. I know I will one day get to stay at home writing and hanging out with the kids. So I am reaching for my dream that I had let sit way too long.
Good luck to you this summer.

Good luck with your writing, Lori. I understand the time issue. I worked until my kids were older and only began writing two years ago, when the twins were 10. I don’t think I could have done it when they were smaller. Hats off to you.

Sounds like a wonderfully full summer. I love Grimm’s fairy tales and think thy are a great spring board for you. Good luck with everything

Sounds crowded in your world!! Kudos to you for taking on so much and pulling it off. I work full time and try to write in the evenings when life isn’t telling me to do other things like…laundry.
I wrote a romantic comedy and now I’m stepping outside my box to paranormal romance. It’s fun though!

It’s great to hear what you’re up to. I’ve been wondering about the pilot, any news on that?
The new books sound awesome and I’m so impressed with your variety – YA, non fiction, romance, children’s books…amazing!
Summer is such a fun time especially with the kids being home. Enjoy! Oh and congrats on landing a new agent (not sure if I got tell you that before) I have no doubt we’ll see a post with the news of a book deal!

Hi, Sharla. That laundry seems to be a common theme. I feel your pain. Congrats on completing your romantic comedy and hooray for the paranormal romance. It is fun. A total blast. I find myself laughing out loud while I write.
Thanks for the kind words, Rebecca. The pilot for the TV series is a definite go, but the timing has changed. The screenplay is coming along nicely. Most of the interior shots will be filmed in California, but the exterior shots done on location take place in Galveston and Kemah, where shooting is preferable in the off season: October to February. I didn’t mention it in the post because it isn’t on my “to do” list. At this point, it is sort of out of my hands, although I expect to be seeing more of the script soon and most exciting will be taking a look at the storyboards. I hope they’ll give me permission to post one.

Um, holy crap not nearly as much as you are? I only have one kid, and I’m struggling to finish the last 10k of a full length paranormal. Will also try to start a novella, but it would have to be submitted by August 11 or so. And I’m just not pumping out the words like I should be doing.

Well, I just realized that there was a comment reply function on this blog, Kinsey. My other comment might not send an alert that there was a response. Sheesh. I’m computarded.

*waves vigorously* Hi, Christine!

Hey there, Kinsey! Thanks for stopping by. Congrats on being so close to completion on your paranormal. It is so hard to get the work done sometimes, especially when you have a child. Is he/she young? Best of luck with your novella and making the submission deadline. Keep me posted.

who me?

I’m working on the never-ending task of polishing my finished paranormal/romance that is making the rounds with a few agents. In the meantime, I’m cranking out an urban fantasy that I’ve pretty much fallen in love with. I’m writing it in the first person (something I swore I’d never do) and I’m roughly 88 pages from being done. Aside from that, I’ve set goals to not be chained to my computer, to weed my flower beds and garden, to go to the beach (when the weather finally decides to straighten out), and to spend more time with my family.

The kids (3) start summer vacation next week (we start later in Canada), but it won’t affect my writing–I hope.
Right now I’m working on a YA paranormal (3rd person) with lots of romance while my YA urban fantasy romance (1st person) is out on submission with two agents (one partial/one full). I’ve also had a request for me to resub the ms once I’ve done some extensive rewrites. I’ve done them, but am waiting to hear back on the full (which is the new version) first before I submit it. There’s a reason for this.
Mary, your Hansel and Gretel idea sounds great. Those are the kind of stories I love. The ones that are very loosely based on a fairy tale. And good luck with the ms on submission. Hopefully we’ll hear some great news in the fall.

Love the cartoon. Thanks for the Follow.
I’m a PB writer, so feel free to send a manuscript for general comments.
